Booms back to catch river rubbish

RIVER CARE groups responsible for the annual Mother of All Clean Up events on the Heathcote River are applauding the city council for reinstating rubbish booms in Woolston. The three groups – AvonHeathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust, Ōpāwaho Heathcote River Network and Avon-Ōtākaro Network – lobbied the city council to reintroduce the booms following successful river clean up events in which tonnes of rubbish was collected. The booms will also be placed in the Avon River at Dallington. The booms gather floating debris as it travels downstream from the city. It is then harvested by City Care and sent to landfill. Rubbish booms were previously deployed in this way but were removed following the earthquakes. “Reintroducing the booms will greatly reduce the amount of rubbish ending up along the edges of the rivers and estuary,” said AvonHeathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust co-ordinator Tanya Jenkins. •Turn to page 7

Cancer survivor cycles with pros By Sarla Donovan AT 73, Rob Dally is looking forward to riding with top New Zealand cycling pros like Jack Bauer and George Bennett. The cancer survivor and keen cyclist is taking part in the Bupa Challenge Tour on Friday – Santos Tour Down Under’s annual mass-participation ride in Adelaide. At the event, recreational cyclists get to ride on the same stage as the world’s top riders on a Union Cycliste Internationale world tour route. The competitors also raise money to help fund cancer research. Mr Dally was diagnosed with prostate cancer seven years ago and had a radical prostatectomy. But he fought through it and has been cancer-free since the early diagnosis operation. He now rides to celebrate this achievement. “I’m keen to ride a stage of the tour that the elites do straight after me and I’m keen to support a good charity,” Mr Dally said. The Halswell resident flew to Adelaide yesterday with his wife Jan as his support crew. He said he was looking forward to meeting other passionate cyclists. Clocking up about

13 years ago when his dodgy knee forced him to stop running. He says cycling is more exciting: “You’re going faster on two wheels – around corners, down hills.” In 2011, he was preparing for a 130km road race and was as fit as he’d ever been, when his surgeon called him in and said he had cancer. “It was pretty awful really . . . pretty sobering.” But he counts himself as one of the lucky ones and credits the experience with changing his thinking. “Do what you want to do today, don’t leave it till tomorrow. Pet dog: I’m not a burglar By Andrew King A FAMILY feared they were in the midst of a potential burglary when they heard a tapping sound on the front door of their Sydenham home at about 4am. The police were called to the Seddon St property on Thursday – but the source of the noise was not as sinister as first feared. The family’s dog was outside wanting to get back in and was tapping on the front door. The family quickly called police back, who were on-route flashing lights and all, to let them know it was their dog. “They were stood down before they got there as she relayed it was her other dog (she has two) doing the tapping,” a police communications spokeswoman said. “The dog was not ‘K9d’ (arrested).” About 5mm of rain fell between 2am and 4am in the city, which could have been a contributing factor to the dog wanting to come inside. It is unclear what the other dog’s involvement in the incident was.

RABBITS THAT gained quite the audience for living in the middle of busy roundabouts in the red zone have been spared for now. More than 20 rabbits, some of which are black in colour, have been spotted on the roundabout at Anzac Drive, Travis and Frosts Rd, and the junction of Anzac Drive and New Brighton Rd. But they caused traffic concerns, with motorists driving slowly to look at them and others parking and crossing Anzac Drive to get to the roundabout. In November, the New Zealand Transport Agency said the highway maintenance team was looking to put a rabbit control

operation in place to deal with the safety issue. That may have included culling the rabbits, or catching and releasing them elsewhere. The idea sparked outrage, with many saying to leave the bunnies alone. But it appears the bunnies will likely be able to live out their days on their roundabouts. “At this stage the transport agency is not proposing to do anything about the rabbits which are sometimes seen on the state highway roundabouts through Brighton/Burwood,” an NZTA spokeswoman told the Pegasus Post. “We continue to advise people not to be distracted while driving and to put their own and other road users’ safety first.”

New Brighton ANZ to close By Andrew King NEW BRIGHTON residents have been dealt another blow as a second bank announces it will be permanently closing its doors. ANZ on Seaview Rd will amalgamate with The Palms branch in Shirley on January 26, meaning the area will only have one bank left - New Brighton NZ Post & Kiwibank in the Brighton Mall. It comes after Westpac announced last year it will be closing its doors in New Brighton, mid-February. An ANZ spokesman told Star Media a 20 per cent decline in transactions over the past two years at the New Brighton site was the main reason the two branches will join. Christchurch East MP Poto Williams posted the news on her Facebook page, which gained a swift and angry response. One person replied to her post saying: “What can we do as a community do to stop all this, everything is being done behind closed doors, no thoughts to the community at all.” Bin Inn New Brighton owner Nikki Griffin said: “As a business owner that uses ANZ not impressed will look at my

issues. She was collected by the SPCA ambulance and had a few teeth removed as well as other treatments to help her heal. Pascal then went to a foster home where her foster parents said she loved “rolling around, chilling out in front of the fan

and sleeping on the pillows.” Mr Helem said the perfect home for Pascal would be one with no young children, “so she can live out her golden years calmly being the centre of attention.” “She has two disclaimers – one regarding the teeth which

she had removed and another regarding a historic soft tissue injury to her right hip,” he said. Mr Helem said SPCA Canterbury has had a very high adoption rate during summer but also a very high influx of animals coming into its care. “Our adoptions for the

November and December period totalled 316. This included 201 cats and kittens, 14 dogs and puppies, 59 rabbits and 32 livestock. This total is an 11 per cent increase over the same period last year,” he said. Pascal is one of about 20 cats SPCA Canterbury is currently trying to rehome. The organisation has 321 animals on-site at present and 139 animals in foster homes. Adoption fees for an adult cat like Pascal are $150, kittens $250, adult dogs $250, puppies $350 and rabbits $50. In a bid to continue rehoming animals, SPCA Canterbury has a Facebook page which profiles different animals in their care. The page has more than 22,000 followers. SPCA is a charity which helps protect animals that are sick, injured, lost, abused or simply abandoned. Another Mother of All Clean Up event is being planned for May 18 with the continuing support of City Care. “Hopefully, with the booms back on the river, we will now see a significant reduction in rubbish downstream,” says Ms Jenkins. Spokesman for AvonŌtākaro Network Evan Smith said: “Floating rubbish presents a real navigation hazard to recreational users on the river and the rubbish along the banks is a real eyesore that

diminishes the amenity value of riverside trails. The booms are placed in bends of the rivers in such a way that they don’t impede navigation, a win-win for all.” The initiative has the support of the Christchurch West Melton Zone Committee, Environment Canterbury and Department of Conservation. News Bird’s candy wrapper nest By Sarla Donovan MOST PEOPLE expect bird nests to be made of twigs, leaves, moss and grass. Not snickers bar and peppermint sweet wrappers – or fibreglass pink batts. But that’s exactly what Clydesdale St, Woolston, resident Tanya Jenkins found in her garden last week. A blackbird’s nest came down in the wind and to Ms Jenkins’ surprise, it was Tanya Jenkins mostly made of plastic. She said when she pulled the nest apart she could distinctly see the different types of plastic used. The Avon Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust co-ordinator has been “pulling nests” for years. “It’s a strange hobby I know, but I’m just so impressed with the building and design technique of birds. The time they spend and skills they have is amazing. But this particular nest

amazed me as the natural building material used was reduced to only about 15 per cent, with the rest being plastic and pink and wool batts materials.”

Birds seemed to be adapting nest-building to use more rubbish and litter, she said, but wasn’t sure what the explanation was.

“Bird life adjusting to city life? Birds being awesome recyclers? Birds getting lazy? I have no answers, but it is interesting to see.”

Teen takes out hotel scholarship AIMEE TAYLOR has just booked a one-way ticket to Adelaide. The former St Margaret’s College student was awarded a $28,000 scholarship for the International College of Hotel Management. Aimee (left) is set to move to the college’s campus in South Australia in July to start the four-year programme, which leads to a Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of International Hotel Management. She was the only winner from New Zealand out of five scholarships awarded throughout Australasia. She undertook a written assignment and did a panel interview for the scholarship. The college is the Asia-Pacific campus of the Swiss Hotel Association and Aimee said it will give her a wider knowledge of the hotel industry. The 18-year-old was born in Melbourne and said she has always felt a deep connection with Australia.

Held at the weekend in Kyle Park, Hornby, the club’s 46-strong team competed in almost every category available from ages five to 50-plus.

Roast the capsicums over the hot grill of the barbecue until the skin has blackened then remove from the heat, place in a plastic bag and loosely tie shut. Leave for 30min, then remove the capsicums from the bag. Peel and discard the charred skin and seeds. Roughly chop the flesh and put in a bowl with the oil. Mix corn of cob with finely chopped onion, spring onions, garlic and ginger, then mix into the capsicum. Add the lime juice and soy sauce. Finely chop the beans and combine everything. Shirley Intermediate When Shirley Intermediate School’s two swimming pools were earthquake damaged the SIS Board of Trustees, having found no likely help sources, undertook costly repairs. Now, after six summers their pupils continue to reap the benefits. In addition to swimming almost daily, pupils can also join the endurance club. As few SIS pupils attend swim clubs, It is significant whenever the 1km continuous swimming certificate is awarded. In addition to hosting Banks Avenue and Shirley Primary schools (who can use the

15m pool), and Shirley Boys High School sports groups, the school has hosted the St Albans Swimming Club – formerly based at the now-closed Edgeware Pool for several years. your way back to it As we return to our normal daily routines after the holidays you may begin to find the odd ache or pain creeping in.

his is a good indicator from our bodies, that the holiday routine was somewhat different. Perhaps you sit a lot for work and you were on the go or, you are normally more active and the holiday break was more sedentary. Either way the sooner you pay attention to these signals the easier it will be to deal with it. So what can you do to ward off pain and stiffness and boost your energy and alertness? 10 simple stretching exercises at your desk that will release tension from head to toe. They take only a few minutes. Set the alarm on your cell phone or computer to go off every hour to remind you it’s time to get up and stretch. Just stand up and sit down - no hands If you stand up and sit down (over and over) without using your hands it can be a challenge, do it while you’re on the phone; no one will know. Shrug your shoulders - to release the neck and shoulders Inhale deeply and shrug your shoulders, lifting them high up to your ears. Hold. Release and drop. Repeat three times. Loosen the hands with air circles Clench both fists, stretching both hands
